Elkins, WV | Volunteer | Three Buildings on the National Register of Historic Places | 2010 - 2011

 

A one-year of AmeriCorps service in Elkins, WV, with the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area, an initiative to integrate Appalachian Forest history, culture, products, and forest management into a heritage based tourism industry that promotes rural community development.

 

Team Role as AmeriCorps Member / Assistant Restoration Carpenter

Responsible for hands-on preservation as well as community service project development and implementation.

Hands-on preservation completed: interior and exterior painting, epoxy repair of wood window sashes 90+ years in age, interior plaster repair

Physical condition assessment and repair of window sashes and exterior wood siding.

Collaborated with team members to restore 60 window sashes from Elkins City Hall (c. 1913) and the Andrew Collett House / Civil War Union Hospital (c. 1772).

Used archival research and historic drawings, and field measurements to prepare existing conditions drawings and adaptive reuse plans and renderings for Riverside High School (built 1902 and 1905), a two-story historic brick school that provided education to the African American population in Elkins.

Created an Access database of 100+ historic properties in Elkins, WV for the Elkins Historic Landmark Commission.
