Pratt Institute
Brooklyn, NY | Education | $200K | Multi-room Renovation in a building on the National Register of Historic Places and a New York City Landmark | 2021 - 2022
Originally Adelphi School, a private school in Brooklyn that Charles Pratt supported, contractors finished the original construction of the first wing in 1868 and the second wing in 1871. Now, Higgins Hall is home to Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture. Architect Steven Holl lead a design team that infilled the central courtyard in 2005.
This project contributed to a new venture for the 100+ year old institution: the creation of a Master of Landscape Architecture Program. Formerly a dark corner of the cellar, two small studio rooms, an office, and for students and instructors to learn and work.
The main challenge in the scope of work: the demolition of a masonry load-bearing wall. In its place, SJS Construction installed steel shoring to Thornton Tomasetti’s structural design.
